In the late 1950's several guys, including my dad leased some land from a local farmer and moved an old grainery in and converted it to a hunting shack. In about 1962 they added a bunkroom on to it. I can remember the day they did this, I was about 5 years old. In those days, as many as 12 guys hunted deer out of the old shack. In 1972, the farmer who leased the land sold us about 2 acres that the cabin was sitting on.

The cabin was located on a site that used to be known as Oak Point Minnesota. There used to be a store and post office located here in the early 1900's. I was told that because it was located only a few miles from the Canadian border that a lot of bootleg wiskey went through the old store. All remnents of the old store are now gone although we have found a few old relics in the woods.

The old wood stove was the heart and sole of the cabin. It was made by Minnesota Stove Company and was a deluxe model. They bought it at a junk yard for $5. It originally had a large warming oven but it did not fit in the cabin so they threw it out in the woods. Today, if the stove was in good condition and had the warming oven, it would be worth well over $1000.

On cold nights we would load it up with coal and it would be 90 degrees when we went to bed, but as soon as the fire went out, the old shack would cool off to outside temperature as there was no insulation.

And then there was the old outhouse. Watch your step the floorboards are kind of soft.
